FOSSIL.

A new devised theatre project with the mission of creating a flexible, minimal play that addresses the experiences and dreams of theatre students of color that can be used to equip and empower actual students to mount their own productions to critically reflect predominantly white theatre departments back to themselves.

Phase 1. Create

Timeline: April - June 2021 (1~2x a week) via Zoom

Compensation: $300 micro-stipend for each artist

Culmination: Community Table Read of new play

This Spring, six artists will share a devising arena to create a new play. In addition to rehearsals, artists will be tasked to actively engage with various communities during their residencies, to develop more heightened awareness of how far and wide certain themes may reach in our communities’ lives. In rehearsals, artists will create, share and connect performance moments in response to the following questions:

What is toxic?
What is healing?
What is the new future, as we see it?

ALL INTERESTED ARTISTS ARE INVITED TO A DEVISING WORKSHOP. WE HOPE TO GET TO KNOW YOU THROUGH WORKING WITH YOU. YOU MUST SHOW UP TO THE WORKSHOP TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY.

Phase 2. Perform

Timeline: October - December 2021 (via Zoom)

Compensation: TBD

Culmination: A Virtual Digital Production of “Fossil”

This Winter, a series of workshop auditions will assemble a company of actors to perform the new devised play. For three months, the company will interpret and rehearse the new play and create their own production version of it. This production will be live streamed for two weekends.

Phase 3. Enable

Timeline: January - December 2022

Compensation: TBD (Monthly micro-stipend)

Culmination: A map connecting coalitions of theatre students of color. A reliable portal for theatre students of color with all the materials necessary to produce this play on their own + pro-bono services including mentoring and production assistance.
